Magnitude 6.0 earthquake hits Eastern Samar; tremors felt across Visayas

A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck near San Julian, Eastern Samar at 2:09 PM on Monday, May 4, 2026, according to the PHIVOLCS. The tremor had a shallow depth of 10 kilometers and was located approximately 9 kilometers north 85° west of the municipality.

The quake was widely felt across Eastern Visayas and nearby provinces. Instrumental Intensity V was recorded in Can-Avid (Eastern Samar), Dulag and Alangalang (Leyte), and Gandara (Samar), indicating strong shaking. Intensity IV was experienced in Abuyog, Palo, and Carigara in Leyte.

Meanwhile, Intensity III was reported in several areas including Naval (Biliran); Hernani (Eastern Samar); Ormoc City, Hilongos, Albuera, Baybay, Villaba, and Isabel (Leyte); as well as Sorsogon City and Bulusan in Sorsogon, and parts of Southern Leyte.

Weaker tremors were also felt in other areas, with Intensity II recorded in Kawayan (Biliran), San Francisco (Cebu), Monreal and Esperanza (Masbate), and Prieto Diaz (Sorsogon). Intensity I was noted in parts of Cebu, including Cebu City, Carcar, and Liloan, along with areas in Albay, Iloilo, Masbate, Sorsogon, Southern Leyte, and Davao Occidental.

Authorities have not yet reported significant damage or casualties as of this writing, but assessments are ongoing. PHIVOLCS has advised the public to remain alert for possible aftershocks and to follow safety protocols.
