A new international gateway moment unfolded in Panglao, Bohol after Bohol-Panglao International Airport received its first-ever charter flight from Narita, Japan, bringing in 163 Japanese tourists on May 2, 2026.

The Cebu Pacific-operated flight (5J8811) marked a key step in expanding Bohol’s international connectivity and signaled renewed interest from the Japanese travel market, which tourism officials have long considered a strong source of visitors.

Governor Erico Aristotle Aumentado said the development strengthens the province’s tourism outlook and may open the door for regular direct arrivals from Japan.

“This is a very encouraging development for Bohol. We are hopeful that this chartered flight will pave the way for regular international arrivals, particularly from Japan, which has always been a valued tourism market for us,” Aumentado said.

The arrival formed part of broader efforts led by Aboitiz InfraCapital Bohol Airport Corporation (ABAC), which manages the airport. ABAC previously joined a provincial business mission to Japan in September 2025, where it held talks with charter flight organizer JTB Corporation.

The discussions focused on the airport’s capacity and infrastructure readiness to handle international operations. ABAC also conducted a follow-up inspection in Tagbilaran in October 2025 to assess immigration, customs, and quarantine facilities.

Bohol-Panglao International Airport General Manager Aldwin Uy said the milestone reflects strong coordination among stakeholders and growing confidence in the airport’s international capability.

“We are proud to support this milestone arrival made possible through our strong partnership with Cebu Pacific, the Provincial Government of Bohol, and our tourism partners in Japan,” Uy said.

He added that the airport continues to upgrade its facilities to support higher international passenger volumes and improve the overall travel experience.

The visiting tourists received a formal welcome upon arrival, with local tourism officials and airport personnel coordinating reception activities that highlighted Boholano hospitality.

Bohol-Panglao International Airport, recognized as the country’s first eco-airport, continues to position itself as a key hub for sustainable tourism growth and improved regional access.

Stakeholders expressed optimism that the successful charter flight will pave the way for more international routes and strengthen Bohol’s role in Philippine tourism.
