Climate activists from the People Power Coalition (P4P) staged a lightning rally and die-in protest in Cebu on Friday, May 8, 2026, coinciding with the ongoing 48th ASEAN Summit and Related Meetings being held in the city.
Holding placards and lying on the ground in a symbolic “die-in,” the protesters called attention to the worsening effects of the climate crisis across Southeast Asia. The demonstration highlighted the region’s growing vulnerability to extreme weather events, rising temperatures, and the continued dependence on fossil fuels.
The group urged ASEAN leaders to take immediate and decisive action by accelerating the transition to renewable energy and strengthening regional climate policies. According to the activists, communities across Southeast Asia continue to face devastating impacts from typhoons, floods, droughts, and other climate-related disasters, making urgent climate action more critical than ever.
P4P emphasized that renewable energy solutions should be prioritized to reduce carbon emissions, lessen reliance on fossil fuels, and ensure long-term energy security for countries in the region.
The protest took place as regional leaders gathered in Cebu to discuss key political, economic, and environmental issues affecting ASEAN member states.
