After participating in the 48th ASEAN Summit and Related Meetings, Xanana Gusmão took time to explore some of Cebu’s most iconic historical and religious landmarks on Saturday, May 9, showcasing the city’s rich cultural heritage to one of Southeast Asia’s respected leaders.

Gusmão visited several notable sites in Cebu City including Cebu City Hall, where he was formally welcomed by Nestor Archival together with members of the Cebu City Council. Local officials warmly received the Timor-Leste leader during his courtesy visit to the city.

The Prime Minister also toured Magellan’s Cross, one of the country’s most recognized historical symbols marking the arrival of Christianity in the Philippines. He later visited the nearby Basilica Minore del Santo Niño de Cebu, the oldest Roman Catholic church in the country and home to the revered image of Señor Santo Niño, where thousands of devotees regularly gather in prayer and thanksgiving.

Gusmão likewise explored Fort San Pedro, the oldest triangular bastion fort in the Philippines built during the Spanish colonial era. The visit offered the foreign dignitary a glimpse into Cebu’s deep historical roots and enduring role in shaping Philippine history and culture.

The Timor-Leste leader was among the heads of state and delegates who attended the recently concluded 48th ASEAN Summit and Related Meetings, which brought together Southeast Asian leaders to discuss regional cooperation, economic development, and diplomatic partnerships.

His visit to Cebu’s landmarks not only highlighted the city’s importance as a cultural and historical destination but also reflected the growing ties and friendship among ASEAN nations.
