From ancient stone walls to centuries-old faith centers, Cebu’s heritage sites became the closing chapter of a diplomatic visit after the 48th ASEAN Summit 2026, as Timor-Leste Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão toured the city before returning home.

Gusmão visited key cultural and religious landmarks in Cebu City on Saturday, including the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño de Cebu, Magellan’s Cross, and Fort San Pedro, wrapping up his ASEAN engagement with a heritage tour.

The Timorese leader also made a courtesy call at Cebu City Hall, where he was received by Mayor Nestor Archival, Vice Mayor Tomas Osmeña, and Basilica rector Fr. Albert Benedict Soliman.

Archival said the visit highlighted Cebu’s historical identity and gave ASEAN leaders a closer look at the city’s cultural legacy.

“It was an honor to welcome Timor-Leste Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão during his visit to some of Cebu City’s historical landmarks following the 48th ASEAN Summit 2026 activities held in Cebu,” Archival said.

He added that the exchange also allowed discussions on governance and public service between local officials and the visiting delegation.

Gusmão’s stop at the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño reflected the shared Catholic heritage between Timor-Leste and the Philippines, both countries with strong religious traditions in Southeast Asia.

Archival said the summit concluded on a generally peaceful note despite traffic disruptions and temporary road closures linked to security measures during the regional gathering.

He thanked residents for their patience during the summit period, saying Cebu’s hosting proved its readiness for large-scale international events.

“Such visits help strengthen friendship and cultural understanding while showcasing the rich heritage and hospitality of Cebu to the international community,” Archival said. (LLP)
