Every May 13, Catholics around the world celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima, a deeply significant devotion that continues to inspire millions through prayer and faith. The feast commemorates the first apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary to three shepherd children — Lucia dos Santos and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto — in Fatima, Portugal in 1917.
According to Church history, the Virgin Mary appeared to the children six times between May and October 1917 at the Cova da Iria field. During these apparitions, Our Lady delivered messages calling for prayer, especially the Holy Rosary, repentance for sins, sacrifice, and peace in the world. Her messages became widely known as the “Message of Fatima,” centered on conversion and spiritual renewal during a time marked by war and suffering.
One of the most remembered moments connected to the apparitions was the “Miracle of the Sun,” witnessed by tens of thousands of people on October 13, 1917. Many devotees believed this extraordinary event affirmed the authenticity of the Marian apparitions and strengthened devotion to Our Lady of Fatima worldwide.
In the Philippines, the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima is celebrated with masses, processions, rosary prayers, candle lighting, and community gatherings. Churches and chapels dedicated to Our Lady are often filled with devotees seeking guidance, healing, protection, and peace. Many faithful also wear white and bring flowers as symbols of purity and devotion to the Blessed Mother.
Beyond traditions and ceremonies, the feast serves as a reminder of hope during difficult times. The message of Our Lady of Fatima encourages people to remain faithful, pray sincerely, and continue spreading compassion and peace within their communities.
More than a century after the apparitions, devotion to Our Lady of Fatima remains alive in the hearts of believers across generations — a testament to enduring faith and the comforting presence of the Blessed Mother in times of uncertainty.
