At least 32 families were left homeless after a fire destroyed houses in Sitio Admacor, Barangay Maguikay on Friday afternoon, May 15, 2026.
Barangay officials said about 89 individuals were affected after 23 houses were razed in the blaze. No injuries or fatalities were reported.
Barangay Captain Eduardo Gumera said residents were immediately advised to prioritize their safety as the fire quickly spread through the community.
He said many of the houses were made of light materials, which contributed to the rapid spread of the flames.
Initial information from local authorities indicated that the fire may have been caused by an exploding butane canister allegedly left unattended during cooking.
However, some residents also claimed that an unattended flat iron may have triggered the blaze.
The Mandaue City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) said the fire was reported at 3:11 p.m. and reached second alarm at 3:20 p.m.
Firefighters declared it under control at 3:58 p.m. and fire out at 4:53 p.m.
Authorities are still assessing the total damage caused by the incident.
Affected families are temporarily staying at Maguikay Elementary School while the City Social Welfare Services (CSWS) continues to account for all displaced residents.
Gumera said the area has long been considered prone to fire incidents and urged residents to remain vigilant, especially during hot weather conditions.
He also reminded households to properly handle electrical appliances and ensure devices are unplugged when not in use to prevent similar incidents.
Relief assistance, including hot meals, was provided by the CSWS and the City Mayor’s Office, while barangay health workers were deployed at the evacuation site to assist displaced families. (VCL)
