Mandaue reverts to five-day work schedule

The skeletal workforce arrangement at Mandaue City Hall has been lifted after Mayor Thadeo Jovito “Jonkie” Ouano ended the four-day workweek policy on May 15, 2026, restoring the city government’s regular five-day operations.

Ouano said the return to a standard work schedule was made to improve public access to government services, noting that constituents find weekday office transactions more convenient.

He added that the recent stabilization of fuel prices also supported the decision to revert to normal operations.

The mayor said feedback from residents showed that a five-day workweek is more practical for those transacting with city offices.

Despite the return to a regular setup, Ouano said the city will continue implementing energy-saving and cost-reduction measures, including monitoring fuel use for government vehicles and ensuring lights and air-conditioning systems are switched off when offices are not in use.

He also requested data from the City Administrator’s Office to compare cost savings between the four-day and five-day workweek arrangements.

City Administrator Gonzalo “Sally” Malig-on Jr. said reports from departments are still being consolidated to assess the difference in operational expenses under both setups.

Malig-on, however, said that service delivery remains the priority, regardless of savings, emphasizing the need for full staffing during regular operations.

The four-day workweek was implemented on April 17 following rising fuel prices linked to global tensions in the Middle East, with Fridays previously designated as work-from-home days. (VCL)
