The Cebu Provincial Government has stepped up its grassroots sports program to identify and develop young athletes who could later compete in regional and national tournaments.
Through the Cebu Provincial Sports Commission, the province has launched its Summer Grassroots Training Program in San Fernando and Consolacion, reviving sports development efforts that officials said had slowed in recent years.
“Kana mangyud sports dugay na wala nabalik, almost seven years,” said Rodrigo Tanza, CPSC executive director.
The program focuses on children aged eight to 15, with training designed to build athletic skills while promoting discipline, teamwork, and healthy lifestyles.
Initial sessions cover basketball and volleyball, with arnis introduced in San Fernando and boxing in Consolacion, depending on local interest and available coaches.
The provincial government is also assessing other sports that may be introduced in additional municipalities.
“Tan-awon nato unsay angay i-develop kay lisod pud kaayo kung walay coaches sa lugar ug walay development,” Tanza said.
Aside from coaching, the province also distributed sports equipment such as volleyball nets, balls, cones, and arnis sticks to support training activities.
The sessions began on May 12 and will run until May 22.
Mytha Canoy encouraged participants to take the program seriously, saying sports can help shape life skills beyond competition.
“Kini usa ka programa nga moandam ninyo sa tinuod nga duwa—mao ang kinabuhi,” Canoy said.
Teresa Pepito-Alegado thanked the provincial government for including their town in the initiative, saying it gives children productive activities during the summer and helps develop local talent.
The program is expected to continue through partnerships with local governments, schools, and Sangguniang Kabataan officials.
Tanza said the long-term goal is to build a complete provincial delegation capable of competing in future regional and national events.
“Katong last Larong Pinoy, wala man gyud tay pure delegation gikan sa province. Mao nang diha ta mangita ug athletes aron puhon makakompleto nata ug delegation sa province,” he said.
The province is also planning future competitions for trainees, with possible scholarship opportunities in universities for standout athletes. (SBA)
