Cebu Province plans inaugural Governor’s Run with 3,500-runner target

The Cebu Provincial Government is gearing up for its first Governor’s Run 2026, a charity event aimed at raising funds for programs supporting underprivileged children in the province.

The initiative will be led by the revived Cebu Provincial Sports Commission (CPSC) and is expected to draw thousands of runners once registration officially opens in the coming days.

CPSC Executive Director Rodrigo Tanza Jr. said preparations are in the final stages, with coordination ongoing ahead of the launch of promotional activities.

“Probably karung Monday, mauna akung gi-arrange nga by Monday maka-start nata sa pag-advertise,” Tanza said.

The event is scheduled during Cebu Province’s founding anniversary celebration in August.

Organizers are targeting at least 3,500 participants for the inaugural run, with expectations that turnout may exceed projections.

“More or less expected basig more than 3,500 runners na siya,” Tanza added.

The race will be centered in Cebu City, with both the starting and finish lines set at the Cebu Provincial Capitol grounds.

Planned categories include 21-kilometer, 12-kilometer, 10-kilometer, 5-kilometer, 3-kilometer, and 1-kilometer races to accommodate different age groups and fitness levels.

Beyond sports and fitness, the event is also positioned as a tourism promotion platform for Cebu’s towns and cities.

Tanza said organizers plan to showcase local destinations and delicacies through tarpaulins placed at hydration stations along the route.

“Atung gi-tap natu sa tourism. Ang concept man gyud namu ana every water station naa siya tarpaulin lang siya, naa didto ang mga delicacy sa atung mga kalungsuran, unsay tourist attraction sa mga kalungsuran,” he said.

The run is also anchored on the province’s “Help to End Hunger” initiative, with proceeds from registration fees intended for feeding programs.

“Yes of course magamit jud siya,” Tanza said when asked if the proceeds would support public welfare programs.

Governor Pamela Baricuatro is also expected to join the event, particularly in the shorter distance category.

“Murag si Gov mudagan siyag 3K guro,” Tanza shared.

The Governor’s Run is among the first major activities under the reactivated Cebu Provincial Sports Commission after years of inactivity.

The Capitol has allocated P50 million for the commission’s 2026 programs, which focus on grassroots sports development, athlete support, and youth engagement.

Aside from the charity run, the provincial government is also preparing for the return of the Governor’s Cup basketball tournament, tentatively set in September as part of its renewed sports program.
