Authorities condemn killing of broadcaster in BARMM

The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFOMS) condemned the killing of radio broadcaster Nestor “Teting” Micator in Malidegao town, Special Geographic Area of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) on the evening of May 21.

Based on initial police reports, an unidentified gunman shot Micator, a news anchor and commentator of D’Empire Radio in Pikit, Cotabato, while he was about to board his motorcycle outside the barangay hall of Barangay Fort Pikit, in the presence of his wife.

The suspect fled with an accomplice after the attack.

PTFOMS extended condolences to Micator’s family, colleagues, and listeners while denouncing the killing as a violent attack on a media worker.

Authorities continue to investigate the incident to determine the motive, including whether it is linked to his work as a broadcaster or his role as a member of the Lupong Pambarangay.

Investigators are pursuing all possible angles to identify and arrest those responsible.

PTFOMS said the killing of a media practitioner raises serious concern, stressing that violence against journalists undermines press freedom and the public’s right to information.

The task force is coordinating with the Philippine National Police and other concerned agencies to monitor the progress of the investigation.

It also urged local authorities and the community to help identify the perpetrators and support efforts to hold them accountable.

PTFOMS reiterated its commitment to strengthen the protection of media workers nationwide amid continuing threats, harassment, and violence against journalists.
