From Senate Halls to Screens: Viral “Bato” Chase Inspires Online Game

What started as a tense moment inside the Senate has now taken on a second life online — not as a press conference or political debate, but as a retro-style online game.

Following the viral circulation of CCTV footage showing Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa sprinting through Senate hallways while allegedly evading arrest attempts by National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) agents, internet users quickly transformed the clip into meme material. Social media feeds filled with edits using soundtracks from classic endless runner games, with many comparing the senator’s hurried dash to scenes straight out of Temple Run.

But one independent developer, Jopel, decided to push the joke even further by turning the viral moment into an actual playable game.

Called Senate Run, the browser-based game places players in a pixel-style Senate setting where they must dodge obstacles, leap over hazards, and avoid pursuing agents while surviving for as long as possible. The game rewards players with higher scores the farther they “escape.”

Among the obstacles featured are slippery floor signs, Senate barricades, and characters resembling pursuing authorities — a clear nod to the now-infamous footage that dominated online discussions earlier this month.

The game draws inspiration from the May 11 incident involving ICC-linked arrest efforts against Dela Rosa inside the Senate complex. Viral clips from the encounter showed the senator rushing through corridors and staircases, with one moment even capturing him stumbling mid-run — a scene that quickly became meme fuel across various social media platforms.

The sudden popularity of Senate Run highlights how quickly Filipinos turn political moments into internet culture. In just days, a serious national controversy evolved into memes, parody edits, and eventually, an online game shared widely online.
