Lapu-Lapu City brings back MUGNA competition for Charter Day

The Lapu-Lapu City Government is bringing back the MUGNA Competition this June as part of the city’s month-long 65th Charter Day celebration, aiming to highlight culture, creativity, and unity among barangays.

The barangay-based creative street design contest was previously featured during the 48th ASEAN Summit in 2026 through an initiative of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.

This year, city officials plan to expand it as a major highlight of the annual festivities.

Preparations were discussed in a coordination meeting led by the City Tourism Office headed by Gary Lao, together with barangay officials from both mainland and island villages.

The Charter Day celebration will run from June 1 to 30 and will include several activities, including the Parade of Flags on June 17.

Mayor Cindi King-Chan said the revival of MUGNA is intended to strengthen community participation and allow barangays to showcase their identity, history, and artistic talent.

Participating barangays will create cultural street installations using indigenous, recyclable, and environment-friendly materials, covering all 30 barangays in the city.

To guide participants, the City Tourism Office will conduct seminars and workshops on local culture, heritage, design, and scenography.

Each barangay will also receive a P25,000 seed subsidy for preparations.

Entries will be judged based on creativity, cultural relevance, craftsmanship, sustainability, cleanliness, and overall presentation.

All installations must be completed by June 11, with illumination set for June 13 for the first round of judging.

The second round will be held on June 16, while winners will be announced during the awarding ceremony on June 22.

The grand champion will receive P100,000, while the second to fifth placers will receive P75,000, P50,000, P30,000, and P20,000, respectively.

Consolation prizes of P10,000 will also be given to participating barangays.

This year’s celebration carries the theme, “Celebrating 65 Years of Service and Progress: Empowered by People, United in Purpose.”
