Akbayan Partylist on Monday declared its readiness to support Risa Hontiveros should she decide to run for president in the 2028 national elections, describing the senator as a leader with “integrity, competence, and clear principles.”
In a statement posted on social media, the party acknowledged what it described as a growing public clamor for Hontiveros to become the standard-bearer of the democratic opposition amid what it called a “deep crisis in governance.”
“Dahil dito, kinikilala ng Akbayan Party ang lumalakas na panawagan para kay Senator Risa Hontiveros bilang kandidato sa pagkapangulo sa 2028, at ang kanyang kahandaang tumindig bilang standard-bearer ng demokratikong oposisyon,” the group said.
Akbayan said it was declaring its “full organizational readiness” for a possible Hontiveros presidential campaign together with allied social movements, sectoral organizations, and local and national leaders.
The group also cited Hontiveros’ legislative work on extended maternity leave, universal health care, affordable medicines, and patient protection measures as reasons behind its support.
“Hindi siya umaatras para sa mahihina, hindi siya natitinag sa harap ng makapangyarihan, at hindi siya tumitigil hangga’t may kailangang ipagtanggol,” it added.
Akbayan framed its endorsement around the slogan “Ang bansang hindi umaatras, susulong sa magandang bukas,” while calling on supporters to unite behind what it described as a reform-oriented agenda.
Earlier, Hontiveros confirmed that she is “seriously considering” a run for higher office in 2028, describing the current political climate as an informal “primaries” among possible opposition leaders.
The Senate Deputy Minority Leader also urged progressive and democratic groups to unite behind a single candidate in the next presidential race, saying a divided opposition would weaken its chances against the administration-backed machinery.
“There can only be one,” Hontiveros said during a media interview in Guimaras.
She added that while discussions about 2028 are ongoing, her immediate focus remains on Senate issues and controversies confronting the chamber.
Hontiveros said she expects to finalize any decision regarding her political plans by December.
