Archival: Schools Ready, Security Set for Return of Classes

Cebu City is fully prepared for the upcoming opening of classes on June 8.

To ensure a smooth transition, local officials are ramping up security measures around schools and mobilizing communities through Brigada Eskwela to prepare campuses for the students’ return.

In a press conference on Monday, Mayor Nestor Archival said that the city government has coordinated with the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) to ensure the safety of learners when classes resume next week.

Archival said he personally discussed security preparations with Cebu City Police Director Col. George Ylanan amid concerns over reports of individuals selling soap and other items along roads and in public areas.

“Nag-estorya mi ni Police City Director George [Ylanan] gabii. Ako siya giingnan nga since naa may concern ron anang naa mamaligya sabon sa mga dalan, ako siya giingnan nga make sure secure ang tanan eskwelahan,” Archival said.

The mayor said he requested the police to establish additional outposts in areas with heavy public activity, particularly near schools, to provide immediate assistance in case of emergencies or complaints.

“Makita ninyo mga police outpost. In case naay emergency and complaints, tawag lang sa number,” he said.

With security preparations underway and schools undergoing cleanup activities, Archival expressed confidence that Cebu City is prepared for the start of the academic year.

“So balik sa school, I would say ready na. Atong cleaners dapat limpyo gyud and hapsay,” he said.

The mayor’s remarks coincided with the official launch of Brigada Eskwela 2026 in Cebu City.

Students, teachers, parents, local government officials, and private sector partners gathered at Cambinocot Elementary School on Monday for the opening of the annual nationwide school maintenance and preparation program spearheaded by the Department of Education (DepEd).

The Brigada Eskwela campaign in Cebu City will run until June 5, giving schools a week to conduct cleanup drives, minor repairs, classroom preparations, and other activities before classes begin.

Mayor Archival and Councilor Nice Archival attended the kickoff ceremony and distributed school supplies funded through the Local School Board.

Brigada Eskwela is a community-based initiative that encourages volunteers and stakeholders to help prepare public schools for the opening of classes through donations, repairs, maintenance work, and campus cleanup activities.

The annual program serves as one of the final preparations before millions of learners nationwide return to school.

Meanwhile, the mayor said the focus remains on ensuring that campuses are not only clean and ready for learning but also secure as students return to classrooms on June 8.
