Proposed hike may raise Mandaue senior aid to P12K

Mandaue City is considering increasing the annual financial assistance for senior citizens from P10,000 to P12,000, pending approval of a proposed ordinance by the City Council.

Councilor Joel Seno, chairperson of the Committee on Appropriations, Budget, and Finance, said the proposal was endorsed by the Office of the Mayor and is now under review by council members.

“We still have to craft an ordinance increasing the financial assistance to senior citizens,” Seno said.

Under the proposal, the increase would be implemented in phases. The initial adjustment would bring the subsidy to P11,000 annually, followed by a second tranche that would complete the planned P12,000 benefit.

“Hinay-hinayon og implement,” Seno said.

He added that the city will first evaluate its fiscal capacity before fully rolling out the increase, which is also targeted for inclusion in the 2027 budget.

The payout schedule for senior citizens will remain unchanged, with disbursements still set in April and November.

Seno said the adjustment forms part of the commitment of Mayor Thadeo Jovito “Jonkie” Ouano to expand support for elderly residents, citing their need for assistance with medicines and healthcare expenses.

“Kinahanglan sad nato mahatagan og assistance ang senior citizens, mga tambal nila,” he said.

The city is also studying possible increases for other sectors, although Seno said no similar commitment has been finalized.

Mandaue currently has about 30,000 registered senior citizens. The last adjustment in their annual subsidy was implemented in 2024, when the amount was raised from P8,000 to P10,000.
