Public cautioned vs ‘fake news’ spreading amid Senate tensions

The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) has urged the public to exercise caution in consuming and sharing online content related to reports of rallies, warning that misinformation may worsen political tensions amid developments in the Senate.

CICC Undersecretary Renato “Aboy” Paraiso said the agency’s monitoring of online platforms has detected discussions suggesting that some groups may be organizing public assemblies linked to the ongoing political situation.

“In light of these developments, the agency encourages Filipinos to be vigilant when consuming and sharing information related to political and religious activities, particularly on social media and messaging platforms,” Paraiso said.

He stressed that while freedom of expression and peaceful assembly are protected rights, these must be exercised responsibly both online and in physical gatherings.

“The agency further called on organizers, participants, and social media users to refrain from sharing content that encourages violence, promotes unlawful activities, or encourages actions that could threaten public safety and order,” he added.

Paraiso warned that misinformation, disinformation, and unverified claims circulating online could mislead the public and intensify political divisions.

“Cyberspace is not only a platform for expressing opinions but also a shared space where every Filipino has a responsibility to ensure that the information you consume and share is accurate and constructive,” he said.

He also appealed to netizens to avoid spreading inflammatory or unverified posts, urging the public to support responsible digital behavior during what he described as a period of political transition.

“We appeal to Filipino netizens to be discerning and responsible online. Let us not add fuel to confusion, division, or conflict by spreading unverified information or inflammatory content. Instead, let us promote respectful dialogue based on facts and digital responsibility,” he said.

The advisory comes as Senate tensions continue to escalate following accusations by Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano and allied lawmakers against members of a rival bloc over alleged corruption linked to flood control projects.

The Blue Ribbon Committee probe proceeded despite internal Senate leadership changes, with hearings rescheduled under a newly designated chair.
