Flights of Blue Eagles Cut Short: The Philippine Basketball Community Mourns Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili

The Philippine sports community is in deep mourning following a profound tragedy. Ateneo de Manila University confirmed the sudden passing of Blue Eagles student-athletes Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili. The two young athletes tragically lost their lives in a drowning incident during an off-season team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora.

The loss of 19-year-old Baterbonia and 21-year-old Adili has sent shockwaves through the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) and local basketball communities, leaving a void where immense potential and bright futures once stood.

Rene Clert Baterbonia: The Rising Star from Davao

At just 19 years old, Rene Clert Baterbonia was a beacon of promise for the future of Katipunan basketball. Born on May 8, 2007, Baterbonia was widely recognized as one of the most elite high school prospects in the country before committing to the Ateneo program in February 2026.

Before wearing the Blue and White, Baterbonia cemented his name in Philippine grassroots sports history during his high school swan song at the Palarong Pambansa. As the heart and soul of the Davao Region squad, he put on a masterful display of skill, passion, and leadership, capturing the Palarong Pambansa Most Valuable Player (MVP) honors and driving his team to a hard-fought silver-medal finish against Calabarzon.

Ateneo secured his commitment amidst high expectations, and he was highly anticipated to be a core pillar of the Blue Eagles’ rebuilding era.

Divine Adili: The Resilient Anchor

Divine Adili, born on April 14, 2005, served as the Foreign Student-Athlete (FSA) for the Ateneo Blue Eagles during the UAAP Season 88 Men’s Basketball Tournament. The 21-year-old big man quickly earned the respect of the Katipunan faithful for his relentless work ethic, physical presence, and infectious team-first attitude.

Adili’s contributions went far beyond the stat sheet. Despite battling through a nagging back injury that limited his minutes and availability, he fought through the pain to anchor the paint for Ateneo. In his 11 appearances, his near double-double averages proved he was a force to be reckoned with—a true anchor who played with immense heart.

A Community United in Grief

The tragedy occurred during what was meant to be a period of bonding and preparation for the upcoming season. In a formal statement released by Ateneo de Manila University, the institution expressed its heavy heart:

“The entire Ateneo community mourns the loss of Rene and Divine. The University extends its heartfelt condolences to their families, friends, teammates, coaches, and loved ones. We ask the community to keep them in their prayers during this most difficult time.”

The university has committed to providing full psychological, emotional, and logistical support to the grieving families, teammates, and staff members affected by the incident. Out of respect for the families during this unimaginably difficult time, the school and the UAAP Media Bureau have requested privacy while wake and funeral arrangements are being finalized.

Rene and Divine represented the very best of student-athletics—the intersection of youthful ambition, fierce competitiveness, and the pursuit of excellence. Though their flights as Blue Eagles were tragically cut short, their legacies will forever remain etched in the rafters of Philippine basketball.
