The basketball community is mourning the loss of a young Nigerian student-athlete, Divine Adili, whose dream of building a better future through sports came to a tragic end.
On June 8, 2026, Ateneo de Manila University confirmed the death of one of its men’s basketball players following an alleged drowning incident during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora.
He came to the Philippines carrying more than just a basketball. He carried the hopes of his family and dreams of a brighter future.
Like many young athletes who leave their homeland in pursuit of opportunity, he traveled thousands of miles from Nigeria with aspirations of obtaining an education, excelling in the sport he loved, and creating a better life for those waiting for him back home.
