Classes Suspended in Several Areas Following Magnitude 7.8 Earthquake

Several local government units have suspended classes for Tuesday, June 9, 2026, following the powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck off the coast of Sarangani and affected large parts of Mindanao.

The suspension orders were issued as authorities continue conducting structural inspections of school buildings and other public facilities to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and school personnel. Local governments said classes will remain suspended in affected areas while assessments and recovery efforts are underway.

Among the areas that announced class suspensions are Sarangani Province, General Santos City, South Cotabato, and Koronadal City. In Davao City, schools have been encouraged to shift to online learning while authorities continue evaluating the condition of educational facilities.

Officials emphasized that the temporary suspension is a precautionary measure aimed at safeguarding the school community amid continuing aftershocks and ongoing inspections.

Areas with Class Suspensions and Adjustments

• Sarangani — Classes suspended until further notice

• General Santos City — All levels, public and private, suspended until further notice

• South Cotabato — All levels suspended until further notice

• Davao City — All levels, public and private, encouraged to shift to online learning

• Koronadal City — All levels, public and private

The earthquake caused damage to buildings, roads, airports, and other infrastructure in several areas, prompting emergency response operations and rapid assessments by local authorities. PHIVOLCS has also warned that aftershocks may continue for weeks or even months following the major seismic event.

Authorities are urging the public to remain alert, follow official advisories, and prioritize safety as recovery and assessment efforts continue across affected communities.

Further announcements regarding classes and government operations are expected as additional inspection results become available.
