The Cebu City Government has intensified its desilting, waterway clearing, and drainage improvement operations as part of efforts to reduce flooding in vulnerable communities ahead of the rainy season.
City action teams composed of personnel from various offices and partner agencies have been deployed to flood-prone areas, including Barangays Kalubihan, Sto. Niño, Tejero, San Roque, Pari-an, Tinago, and Ermita.
Ongoing works are also being carried out along Leon Kilat Street, M.J. Cuenco Avenue, Bonifacio Street, Sikatuna Street, Carbon area, and adjacent drainage channels.
The city said the interventions focus on clearing silt, garbage, and other debris that obstruct water flow, aiming to improve drainage capacity and prevent water accumulation during heavy rainfall.
Instead of waiting for flooding incidents, the local government has shifted to preventive measures through continuous clearing and maintenance of waterways.
Mayor Nestor Archival said early preparation is crucial in protecting communities, particularly in flood-prone areas that have long been affected during heavy rains. He stressed the need for sustained coordination and public cooperation in flood mitigation efforts.
The initiative aligns with the city’s “Smart, Sustainable, and Inclusive Cebu City” agenda, which promotes preventive infrastructure management, environmental responsibility, and responsive governance.
Officials said the ongoing operations are intended to reduce flood risks and improve community resilience as the rainy season sets in.
