Kindness Beyond Business: Cebu Seller Earns Praise for Understanding Customer’s Surgery-Related Cancellation

For many small business owners, a canceled order often means lost income and added inconvenience. But for one food seller in Minglanilla, Cebu, compassion came before profit.

Debra Anne Cajuelan recently shared an experience with a customer who reached out to cancel an order after learning he would need to undergo surgery. Faced with an unexpected medical situation, the customer explained why he could no longer proceed with his purchase.

Instead of insisting on standard cancellation policies, Debra chose to respond with understanding. Since the ingredients and materials for the order had not yet been bought or prepared, she allowed the customer to redeem his down payment at a later date.

Debra acknowledged that order cancellations can be challenging for small businesses, particularly those that rely on advance bookings and careful budgeting. However, she believes that every situation deserves consideration, especially when customers are dealing with circumstances beyond their control.

Her decision was soon rewarded in an unexpected way.

A few days later, the customer contacted her again and asked if the amount he had already paid could be used for a bilao order instead. With no heavy workload at the time, Debra happily accommodated the request.

The experience reinforced her belief that kindness and understanding help build stronger relationships between businesses and customers. While policies are important, she said empathy can sometimes make a bigger impact.

Debra’s story has since resonated with many online, with netizens praising her willingness to prioritize compassion during a difficult moment in her customer’s life. For many, the exchange serves as a reminder that simple acts of understanding can go a long way—both in business and in everyday life.
