Marcos orders psychosocial support training for teachers in quake-hit areas

Teachers from areas affected by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake will undergo psychosocial support training to help address the mental and emotional needs of students, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. said Wednesday.

During his visit to General Santos City, Marcos stressed the importance of supporting learners as they cope with the impact of the disaster.

He said the Department of Health already has programs in place that provide mental health assistance for children who have experienced traumatic events such as natural calamities.

“Kausap ko ang mga teacher at sinabi ko sa kanila alalahanin nila na traumatizing itong experience para sa mga estudyante, para sa mga bata,” Marcos said after inspecting damaged structures in General Santos City.

He said teachers will be given training to help students recover emotionally and mentally in the aftermath of the earthquake, noting that psychosocial support is a key part of the government’s recovery response.

“Yung mga teacher mismo ang gagawin nila meron silang training after this. Magte-training sila para diyan, precisely para makausap. That is one of the main concerns,” he added.

Marcos said the mental recovery of learners is among the government’s priorities as communities continue to recover from the disaster.

The President also assured assistance for teachers whose homes were damaged, saying they may seek support from the National Housing Authority.

He likewise oversaw the distribution of food packs and P5,000 cash assistance under the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations program for around 4,000 workers who lost their jobs due to the earthquake.
