GLAN, Sarangani — As relief operations continue across parts of Southern Mindanao, residents in Glan, Sarangani and nearby municipalities are appealing for greater attention and assistance following the devastating magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck offshore Sarangani on June 8.
Greatess Joy Ampan has called on media organizations and the public to help highlight the situation in affected communities, particularly those located in remote and mountainous areas that have received limited coverage since the disaster.
According to residents, many families remain without adequate food, clean drinking water, electricity, and communication services days after the powerful earthquake. Continuous aftershocks have further heightened fears among residents, forcing some families to remain outdoors or seek shelter in open spaces rather than return to damaged homes.
Reports from affected communities indicate that access to essential supplies remains a major challenge, especially in far-flung barangays where transportation and communication have been disrupted. Residents say that while some areas have begun receiving assistance, many communities are still waiting for relief and support.
The earthquake, one of the strongest to hit the region in recent years, caused widespread damage across parts of Sarangani and neighboring provinces. The disaster also triggered numerous aftershocks, adding to the uncertainty faced by affected residents.
Ampan emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the plight of underserved communities, expressing hope that increased public attention will accelerate relief and recovery efforts.
“Every voice matters, and right now, Sarangani needs to be heard,” she said.
As local governments, humanitarian groups, and volunteers continue their response efforts, residents are urging authorities and the public not to overlook isolated communities that remain in urgent need of assistance.
