Cebu City to send P5 million aid to quake-hit General Santos City

The Cebu City Government has approved P5 million in financial assistance for General Santos City following the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck off Sarangani on June 8, 2026, as local officials move to support ongoing relief and recovery operations in Mindanao.

Mayor Nestor Archival secured approval from the Cebu City Council for the release of the assistance, which will be sourced from PAGCOR funds.

In his June 9 letter to Councilor David Tumulak, Archival said the funding will help sustain emergency response efforts in affected communities.

“This will directly contribute to relief operations, rehabilitation, and recovery efforts for the affected communities, alleviating their immediate hardships and helping them rebuild their lives,” Archival said in his request.

The City Council unanimously approved the measure, with Tumulak sponsoring the resolution. He said Cebu City opted to provide financial assistance instead of deploying responders, noting that coordination with counterparts in Mindanao indicated that response teams are already active on the ground.

Officials said the city continues to monitor the situation and is assessing possible additional assistance in coordination with disaster response agencies.

The Cebu City aid comes as local government units across the region coordinate support efforts for quake-affected areas in Mindanao.
