The number of confirmed fatalities from the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck off Maasim, Sarangani on June 8 has risen to 47, while 688 people were injured and 31 remain missing, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said Thursday.
In a video message to reporters, OCD Deputy Administrator for Administration Assistant Secretary Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro IV said the casualties were recorded mainly in Regions 11 and 12, based on the latest validation of reports.
Data from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) showed that of the 47 deaths being verified, 12 were from Region 11 and 35 from Region 12.
The fatalities were reported in Davao Occidental with 11 deaths, Davao del Sur with one, Sarangani with 20, and South Cotabato with 15.
The number of injured has reached 688, with only one case in Region 11 fully validated so far.
Of the total, 40 were reported in Region 11 and 647 in Region 12, while validation of remaining reports is ongoing.
Authorities also reported 31 missing persons, including 13 from Region 11 and 18 from Region 12.
Alejandro said the earthquake affected 75,324 families or 346,449 individuals across 291 barangays in Regions 9, 11, 12, and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).
Of those affected, 3,515 families or 16,349 individuals are staying in 32 evacuation centers, while 7,279 families or 29,260 individuals are receiving assistance outside evacuation sites.
The rest are being supported by relatives and friends.
Damage to housing has reached 12,641 units across the affected regions. Of these, 10,352 were partially damaged while 2,289 were totally destroyed.
Authorities said assessment and validation efforts are ongoing as response operations continue across affected areas.
