Consolacion mayor questions delay in Central Elementary skywalk project

Consolacion Mayor Teresa “Nene” Alegado has raised concern over the delayed construction of a proposed skywalk in Consolacion Central Elementary School, questioning the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) over the slow progress of the project intended to improve pedestrian safety along a busy national highway.

Based on records from the Municipal Engineering Office (MEO), the skywalk project was originally scheduled to start in September 2024 and be completed by April 2025.

However, as of this year, no structure has been completed or made available for public use.

Alegado said she is worried about the delay, noting that classes have already resumed and the area continues to see a high volume of pedestrians, including students crossing a national highway.

She said the situation poses both safety risks and potential traffic congestion, especially during school hours when students regularly cross the roadway.

The mayor said the local government has already taken steps to follow up on the project, including sending a formal letter of concern to the DPWH and holding coordination meetings regarding its implementation. Despite these efforts, she said progress remains slow.

The Municipal Engineering Office also reportedly requested the installation of a temporary pedestrian lane while the skywalk construction is ongoing, but no response has been received from the DPWH.

Parents of students in the area have also expressed concern over the situation, citing fears for the safety of children crossing the busy road daily while the infrastructure project remains unfinished.
