The Cebu City Government has urged residents, businesses, and institutions to strictly observe responsible electricity use following separate Yellow Alerts declared by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (National Grid Corporation of the Philippines) over the Visayas Grid on June 12 and June 13, 2026.
The advisory from the Cebu City Government came after NGCP placed the grid under Yellow Alert due to limited operating reserves driven by ongoing power plant outages and rising evening demand.
On June 12, the alert was in effect from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., while a second alert followed on June 13 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. NGCP data showed that available capacity in the Visayas remained slightly above projected peak demand on both days, but with reduced reserve margins considered critical for grid stability.
Grid officials attributed the situation to the continued unavailability of major coal-fired plants TVI 1, TVI 2, and PEDC 3, along with several other generating units on forced outage or reduced operation.
The constraints resulted in hundreds of megawatts of unavailable supply across the system.
A Yellow Alert is issued when operating reserves fall below required contingency levels, indicating limited capacity to respond to sudden disruptions in power generation or transmission.
Despite the alerts, no rotational brownouts were announced. However, the Cebu City Government emphasized the importance of reducing electricity use, particularly during peak evening hours from 6:00 p.m. onward, to help ease pressure on the grid.
Local authorities said they continue to coordinate with NGCP and other energy stakeholders to monitor the situation and ensure the public remains informed of any further developments affecting power stability in the Visayas.
