The top two leaders of Cebu Province led the observance of the 128th Philippine Independence Day on Thursday, June 12, as officials underscored calls for unity, responsible governance, and renewed commitment to nation-building during ceremonies held at the Provincial Capitol.
A large Philippine flag unfurled at the Capitol grounds set the backdrop for the commemoration, which was attended by provincial officials, department heads, Capitol employees, and members of the executive team.
Governor Pamela Baricuatro led the message of reflection, urging Cebuanos to rise above political divisions and focus on shared progress, saying the country’s heroes fought not only for freedom but for a future anchored on solidarity and collective responsibility.
She said Independence Day should serve as a reminder to prioritize unity over political conflict and development over division.
“Today, perhaps one of the greatest ways we can honor our heroes is setting aside politics that divides communities and distracts us from progress,” Baricuatro said.
The governor stressed that Cebu deserves leadership that brings people together, listens to concerns, and focuses on solutions rather than political differences.
Baricuatro also drew inspiration from Datu Lapu-Lapu, describing him as a lasting symbol of courage and resilience in leadership.
She said she often reflects on the hero’s legacy during challenging moments in public service, particularly when political pressures intensify.
“There are days when the responsibilities of leadership feel especially heavy, and when the noise of politics threatens to drown out our work that truly matters,” she said.
Baricuatro added that the statue of Lapu-Lapu reminds her that courage is not the absence of difficulty but the ability to remain firm despite it.
“Every time I see that statue standing tall, I am reminded that courage is choosing to stand firm despite them,” she said.
She reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to ensuring that the freedoms won by past generations translate into better opportunities and improved quality of life for Cebuano families.
The governor also encouraged Cebuanos to embody resilience, compassion, and cooperation, saying true progress is achieved through unity and shared purpose.
Vice Governor Glenn Anthony Soco echoed the same message in a separate statement, emphasizing that Independence Day is both a tribute to the country’s heroes and a reminder of civic duty.
In his message titled “Adlaw sa Kagawasan 2026,” Soco paid tribute to Filipino heroes and generations who answered the call to defend and preserve the nation’s freedom.
He said freedom is not only a legacy from the past but also a continuing responsibility that must be strengthened through unity, integrity, and genuine public service.
“As we celebrate the 128th Adlaw sa Kagawasan sa Pilipinas, hinaut nga magpabilin nga buhi sa atong kasingkasing ang ilang sakripisyo ug gugma sa nasud. Tungod kanila, gawasnon kita karon; tungod kanato, magpadayon ang maayong kaugmaon sa sunod nga mga henerasyon,” Soco said.
He added that Filipinos must safeguard freedom daily through unity, righteousness, and service to the people.
