A plume of ash rose from Kanlaon Volcano before dawn on Saturday, marking another sign of continued unrest in Negros Island as authorities maintained Alert Level 2 status over the active volcano.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the ash emission occurred at 7:04 a.m., producing grayish plumes that reached about 600 meters above the crater before drifting west, as observed through the IP camera at the Kanlaon Volcano Observatory in Canlaon City.
Phivolcs said the event lasted 97 minutes and formed part of the volcano’s 24-hour monitoring report, which also recorded nine volcanic earthquakes and two volcanic tremors lasting between 14 and 81 minutes.
The agency reported that Kanlaon emitted 2,527 tons of sulfur dioxide on Friday, higher than the 1,548 tons recorded the previous day. It also observed plume activity reaching 600 meters that drifted northwest and westward.
Phivolcs said the volcano’s edifice remains inflated, indicating continued internal pressure and unrest.
Kanlaon remains under Alert Level 2, which prohibits entry into the four-kilometer permanent danger zone and restricts flights near the volcano.
The state volcanology agency also warned nearby communities of possible hazards, including sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions and other precursory magmatic activity.
