CEBU CITY, Philippines — A Cebu-based photographer captured a series of dramatic lightning strikes illuminating the night sky over Guadalupe, Cebu City during a powerful thunderstorm on Saturday night, June 13, 2026.
Photographer Girlou Sumalinog took the images from Guadalupe between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. using a GoPro Hero 12. The photographs show brilliant bolts of lightning piercing through dark storm clouds, creating a breathtaking display of nature’s power above the city skyline.
The thunderstorm was accompanied by periods of heavy rain and frequent lightning activity across parts of Metro Cebu. While the spectacle provided stunning visuals for photographers and residents, authorities continue to remind the public to take precautions during severe weather events.
Lightning occurs when electrical charges build up inside thunderstorm clouds. As ice particles, water droplets, and strong air currents collide within the clouds, positive and negative charges become separated. Once the electrical imbalance becomes too great, a sudden discharge of electricity occurs, producing a lightning flash. The rapid heating of the surrounding air then creates the sound of thunder.
Meteorologists note that lightning activity is common during intense thunderstorms, particularly during the rainy season when warm, moist air fuels the development of towering storm clouds.
The images captured by Sumalinog serve as a striking reminder of both the beauty and power of nature, as lightning illuminated the skies above Cebu City on a stormy Saturday evening.
