Kawasan Falls to stay open amid P110-M rehabilitation push

The Provincial Government of Cebu is moving forward with a P110-million rehabilitation program for Kawasan Falls while keeping one of the province’s most visited tourist sites open to the public, as authorities attempt to balance environmental restoration with tourism-driven livelihoods.

Governor Pamela Baricuatro said the province opted against a full closure of the attraction, stressing the need to sustain economic activity in Badian while repair works are underway following damage left by Typhoon Tino.

The governor said the rehabilitation program will focus on restoring affected sections of the Kawasan Falls complex while ensuring that tourism operations continue in designated areas.

Baricuatro said the provincial government recognizes the importance of Kawasan Falls not only as a tourism destination but also as a key source of income for residents engaged in guiding services, transport, and small businesses supporting the industry.

Instead of shutting down the site, she said the province will implement a phased rehabilitation approach to allow partial access for visitors while repairs progress.

The program, funded with an initial allocation of P110 million, is expected to address structural and environmental damage caused by flooding and strong currents during Typhoon Tino, which altered parts of the falls area.

Baricuatro said among the priority concerns are damaged pathways, debris buildup, and displaced rock formations that may pose safety risks to visitors.

“Some of the rocks kay naa na sa tunga tungod sa nahappen sa typhoon. We will make sure that it is safe for everyone and environmentally compliant siya,” she said.

The governor clarified that the project is focused solely on environmental rehabilitation and safety improvements, and will not include commercial developments within the protected site.

She added that the provincial government may consider additional funding support if necessary, depending on the progress and requirements of the rehabilitation works.

Coordination is currently underway with the municipal government of Badian led by Mayor Jerome Librando, with implementation expected once final preparations are completed.

Baricuatro earlier conducted an on-site inspection of the first level of Kawasan Falls to assess the extent of damage caused by Typhoon Tino, which previously forced temporary suspension of tourism activities and canyoneering operations in the area.

Officials said the reopening strategy is aimed at ensuring that tourism recovery continues even as long-term restoration work is carried out.
