Mandaue intensifies dengue prevention campaign amid rainy season

The Mandaue City Health Office is intensifying its dengue prevention campaign as the city continues to record cases of the mosquito-borne disease during the rainy season, although figures remain lower compared to the previous year.

Assistant City Health Officer Dr. Phyllis Bidon said dengue cases are still being monitored, but current data show a decline compared with the same period in 2025.

She noted that from January to June 17, 2026, the city recorded 198 dengue cases, lower than the 273 cases logged during the same timeframe last year.

City health records further showed that Mandaue posted a total of 520 dengue cases in 2025.

Bidon said dengue transmission typically rises during the rainy season due to stagnant water that serves as breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

She emphasized that prevention remains the most effective strategy, with the city continuing its vector control operations to reduce mosquito populations.

The city government has been conducting regular inspections and clean-up drives to eliminate potential breeding sites across barangays.

Bidon clarified that not all mosquitoes carry the dengue virus, noting that infection is mainly linked to the Aedes aegypti species, which has been detected in Mandaue through ongoing monitoring.

She said the city continues to implement the “4S” strategy, which stands for search and destroy, self-protection, seek early consultation, and support spraying.

Residents, especially parents, were also urged not to delay medical consultation when fever or dengue-like symptoms appear.

Barangay task forces and dengue brigades across the city’s 27 barangays remain active in supporting prevention and information campaigns.

Bidon said the public must remain vigilant, stressing that dengue continues to pose a health risk despite the lower case count.

In Barangay Labogon, Barangay Health Workers conducted a dengue awareness caravan on June 20 to educate residents on prevention measures and early detection.

Volunteer Amy Heyrosa said information drives were conducted to encourage households to maintain cleanliness and prevent mosquito breeding.

She said residents were reminded to keep surroundings clean to avoid dengue infections, especially during the rainy season.
