DepEd expands school safety, mental health programs

The Department of Education (DepEd) is strengthening child protection measures by establishing accessible and confidential reporting channels where learners can safely report bullying, violence, cyberbullying, and other protection concerns.

The initiative forms part of the department’s broader effort to improve school safety and ensure that incidents affecting students are reported and addressed promptly.

DepEd said the new reporting mechanisms are designed to encourage learners to come forward without fear, while allowing schools to respond more effectively to protection issues.

To further improve the system, the department is consulting student leaders and parent-teacher associations to identify barriers that discourage learners from reporting bullying, threats, and other forms of violence.

Recognizing the growing risks in online spaces, DepEd is also rolling out age-appropriate digital citizenship and online safety programs for learners, parents, and school personnel.

The department said the initiative aims to equip school communities with the knowledge and skills needed to prevent cyberbullying, practice responsible online behavior, and respond to digital threats.

DepEd has likewise institutionalized intervention programs that provide psychological first aid, counseling, and psychosocial support services for victims, perpetrators, and bystanders affected by bullying and other incidents.

The department said these measures are intended to promote a safer and more supportive learning environment while addressing the emotional and mental health needs of everyone involved.
