Over 20,000 participants from different organizations, cities, and municipalities joined Cebu’s first-ever Grand Pride March on June 27 at Downtown Cebu.
Several organizations, friend groups, and company employees flaunted their costumes and looks with Pride, showcasing colorful rainbow motifs across the Osmeña Boulevard-to-Plaza Independencia stretch.
The parade started at 2:30 P.M. at the Capitol and arrived at Plaza Independencia after 4 PM.
Heavy rainstorms flooded nearby corners of the plaza, leading to slight pauses by the entrance. Festivities for the night took center stage inside the plaza as rain stopped shortly after the heavy pour.
Cebu Pride Movement partnered directly with the Cebu Province and Cebu City Governments to organize the fourth Cebu Pride Festival and the historic first-ever Cebu Grand Pride Parade. Cebu Province Governor Pamela “Pam” Baricuatro also signed the Right to Care ordinance for Cebu earlier this month, June 2, noting that same-sex couples can now be recognized as care partners for support during illness, emergencies, and medical crises.
The LGBTQIA+ community in Cebu gathered not only for celebration for their identities, but also as a protest to stand for their rights, stand against discrimination, and demolish inequality.
The Grand Cebu Pride Parade is part of Cebu Pride Movement’s month-long celebration in line with this year’s Pride month. Previous weekends included Run with Pride last June 7 and the Big Pride Picnic at Cebu IT Park last June 14.
