Mandaue City residents may soon have another recreational space as the city government moves to develop a Department of Agriculture (DA)-owned property in Barangay Ibabao-Estancia into a public park.
The proposed park will rise on a roughly 3,000-square-meter lot near a shopping mall under a 35-year usufruct agreement between the DA and the Mandaue City Government.
Under the agreement, the city has the right to use and develop the property while ownership remains with the national government.
Councilor Joel Seno said the usufruct agreement also allows the city government to authorize another entity to undertake the development of the property, provided the project remains consistent with the purpose for which the land was granted.
According to Seno, a private developer will be tapped to construct the park.
He said one of the property’s existing features, a greenhouse, will be retained and incorporated into the overall design instead of being removed.
The greenhouse is expected to become part of the park’s landscape while helping preserve the site’s original agricultural character.
“The mayor wanted it para naay adtoan ang mga tao,” Seno said, explaining that the project is intended to provide residents with another venue for leisure, recreation, and outdoor activities.
The councilor said work on the project is expected to begin this year, with the city targeting its completion before the end of the year.
“It will be transformed into a beautiful park, hopefully,” he said.
Although the city government has yet to disclose the project’s cost, Seno said the completed park will be open to the public free of charge.
Once completed, the park is expected to provide residents with an additional green space where families, joggers, and other visitors can spend time outdoors while expanding the city’s available public recreational areas.
