The Influence of Alex Eala’s Success to Filipina Athletes

Historically, organized sports were largely male-dominated, where men receive more opportunities and support than women in showing off their athletic capabilities. Over time, female athletes emerged, championing in various sports and in different stages. This growing number of female athletes is globally evident, including in the Philippines, where a Filipina tennis athlete, Alex Eala, has paved the way for women in Philippine sports.

Alexandra “Alex” Eala is a 21-year old tennis player from Quezon City who made history  for Philippine tennis. Some of her milestones include winning the Junior Grand Slam in the US Open in 2022, and reaching the fourth round of Wimbledon this year. Her triumph inspired young Filipina athletes to continue pursuing their athletic careers.

Eala has become a role model for the next generation of Filipina athletes, showing that dedication and hard work result in remarkable victories. She is a testament to how Filipina talent can thrive in international stages despite facing difficulties athletes encounter throughout their career.

Eala acknowledged her influence on the next generation of Filipina athletes and feels honored to be their inspiration. However, she reminds them to be their own person and make their own paths.

“The main message here is that I don’t want them to look at me and say, ‘I want to be the next Alex Eala.’ I want them to look at me and say, ‘I want to be the first me. I want to make my own path,’” she said.

Alex Eala definitely left a mark on Philippine sports, specifically tennis. She has also become a reminder that women can excel in traditionally male-dominated sports, and that Filipina athletes can continue reaching greater success on international stages.
