Mandaue suspends face-to-face classes due to Kanlaon ashfall

Face-to-face classes in Mandaue City were suspended on Thursday, July 9, as a precautionary measure following the ashfall caused by the eruption of Mt. Kanlaon.

The local government ordered the suspension of in-person classes at all levels in both public and private schools until further notice to protect the health and safety of students, teachers, and school personnel.

Public schools were directed to temporarily shift to distance learning modalities, while private schools were encouraged to adopt similar arrangements or implement other appropriate academic measures.

The city government said it is closely monitoring the situation in coordination with concerned national agencies and urged residents to remain vigilant and follow official advisories.

Several guardians from Mandaue City Central School welcomed the suspension, saying student safety should take priority.

“Mas maayo i-cancel na para safe ang mga bata ba,” said guardian Bowin Laborte.

“Mas maayo gyung pundo nalang gyud,” said parent Jonathan Gualisa.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), Kanlaon Volcano produced a moderately explosive eruption at 7:33 a.m. on Thursday.

PHIVOLCS has maintained Alert Level 2 over the volcano.
