CBCP monitors Duterte impeachment, urges respect for rule of law

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) said it is closely monitoring the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, while urging all parties involved to allow the constitutional process to proceed.

Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo, chairperson of the CBCP–Episcopal Commission on Interreligious Dialogue, said the Church considers the impeachment proceedings an important process that must be handled according to the law.

“We are closely monitoring the impeachment trial. Our position remains unchanged: this impeachment trial is important,” Bagaforo said during a press conference after the 132nd CBCP Plenary Assembly held in Sinacaban, Misamis Occidental.

The bishop called on those involved in the proceedings to respect the process and allow the Senate impeachment court to determine the outcome.

“Let the impeachment process take its course. Let the rule of law render its own verdict,” he said.

Bagaforo clarified that the CBCP is not taking a position for or against Duterte, saying the Church’s focus is on upholding the Constitution and accountability among public officials.

“This is not a condemnation of the Vice President. We are not taking a stand for or against the Vice President. What we are upholding is the Constitution and the rule of law,” he said.

He added that the Church’s position is rooted in the pursuit of justice and the principle that government officials must remain accountable for their actions.

“The Church advocates for nothing other than justice. This also serves as a reminder to public officials to be accountable,” Bagaforo said.

The CBCP held its 132nd Plenary Assembly from July 8 to 10, with more than 80 bishops and archbishops participating in the meeting.

The impeachment trial of Duterte is being heard by the Senate sitting as an impeachment court.

She is facing allegations involving misuse of confidential funds, unexplained wealth, bribery, corruption, and alleged grave threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and former House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez.

Duterte has repeatedly denied the allegations.
