Electronics During Rainy Days: Usage Safety Tips

As the rainy season continues to bring heavy downpours and risks of flood across the country, looking after electric appliances is something that each household should bear in mind.

Here are some tips to keep you and your families safe from any possible electrical and water contact:

Keep Cords and Hands Dry

Families are advised to ensure that electrical cords and outlets remain dry before use, making sure hands are also dry before handling any plugged-in cord. Moisture in these areas increase possible risks of electric shock. Wet items, such as umbrellas or raincoats, should not be placed near outlets or appliances to prevent any contact with water.

Unplug Unnecessary Appliances during Storms

Non-essential appliances, such as television, computers, and kitchen equipment, should be unplugged during heavy rainstorms to protect the devices from sudden power surges or lightning strikes that can damage the units.

Charge Devices Ahead

During downpours, unexpected outages and brownouts might occur if weather conditions affect electric cables and posts. Gadgets such as cellphones, radios, powerbanks, and flashlights should be fully charged in anticipation for any outage so that a working phone and light remains available in case of emergencies.

Turn Off Main Breakers During Floods

Once floodwater begins entering a house, the main breaker should be switched off immediately to cut electricity supply throughout the house and prevent possible electrocution.

Inspect Flooded Appliances and Electronics

Outlets and appliances that have been submerged in floodwater should not be used right away even after the water has dried. Electronics that have come into contact with water should be checked by a licensed electrician first to rule out any damages before restoring power to its device or outlet.

This rainy season, it is important to remember that electricity is dangerous for humans to get in contact with when wet and unprotected. Remembering these tips and creating a regular routine during rainy seasons can save not only gadgets, but also lives.
