Student dies due to deworming activity?

The Department of Education (DepEd) said it will review its health policies following the death of a Grade 4 learner during a routine deworming activity in Trece Martires City, Cavite.

The activity was conducted on July 2 at Hugo Perez Elementary School-Annex in coordination with the City Health Office.

In a statement on Monday, DepEd said it is working with health authorities to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“We are committed to fully understanding what happened, and are working closely with health authorities as they investigate,” DepEd said.

The agency added that the incident prompted a review of its existing health and safety protocols to strengthen measures aimed at protecting learners.

“DepEd is also taking this opportunity to review our own health and safety protocols, to ensure the well-being of every learner,” it said.

DepEd expressed condolences to the learner’s family, friends, and the school community, saying it is providing emotional, psychological, and logistical support to those affected.

“We are providing the necessary emotional, psychological, and logistical support to the family during this difficult time,” the agency said.

The department also urged the public to rely on verified information from health authorities while investigations continue.

Meanwhile, DepEd Cavite and the school administration said they are coordinating with local authorities to ensure the safety and welfare of learners following the incident.

“To all those who are equally saddened, as well as those alarmed, anxious, even those who are infuriated by the unfortunate event, of which no one certainly wished to happen, rest assured, the DepEd Cavite Province and the school administration concerned, are not standing by idly and are continuously making efforts in reaching out to extend our immeasurable depth of sympathy and prayers to the bereaved family and loved ones of our departed pupil,” they said in a separate statement.
