The Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) clarified that applicants do not need to present an existing valid government issued ID to apply for a Postal ID.
In a statement on Wednesday, PHLPost said first time applicants only need to submit a birth certificate, a barangay certificate or other acceptable proof of address, and a duly accomplished Postal ID application form.
Postmaster General and Chief Executive Officer Maximo Sta. Maria III said the Postal ID was designed to provide Filipinos with easier access to a government issued identification document, particularly those applying for their first ID.
“The Postal ID has always been intended to make it easier for Filipinos to establish their identity, especially those applying for their first government issued ID,” Sta. Maria said.
“By presenting a birth certificate and proof of address, eligible applicants can already begin the process of securing a trusted government issued ID,” he added.
PHLPost said applicants who cannot provide a barangay certificate may submit alternative proof of address, including recent electricity, water, internet, or utility bills showing their name and current residential address.
The agency issued the clarification after receiving reports of confusion among applicants who believed they needed another government ID before they could secure a Postal ID.
According to PHLPost, the Postal ID remains accessible to first time ID holders, students, job seekers, senior citizens, solo parents, persons with disabilities, and individuals in underserved communities.
The ID is accepted for various public and private transactions, including opening bank accounts, passport applications, claiming parcels, sending and receiving mail, and processing legal and financial transactions.
PHLPost encouraged applicants to check the official requirements before visiting application centers to ensure a smoother processing experience.
