Cebu’s innovators, institutions, destinations earn ProgreCEBU honors

A coastal destination known for its sardine run, a homegrown property developer, a pharmaceutical company, a global fashion designer, and Cebu restaurants recognized by the Michelin Guide were among those honored during the 3rd ProgreCEBU Awards on Wednesday, July 23.

The annual recognition program celebrated individuals, institutions, destinations, and restaurants that contributed to Cebu’s growth across tourism, business, healthcare, creative industries, and culinary sectors.

Organized by The Freeman in partnership with the Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), the awards ceremony held at Bai Hotel in Mandaue City expanded its recognition this year to include Cebu restaurants featured in the inaugural Michelin Guide Manila and Environs & Cebu 2026.

Moalboal was named Most Distinguished Destination for its efforts in promoting sustainable tourism while protecting its marine resources.

The southern Cebu town, known internationally for its sardine run and diving attractions, was recognized for maintaining its marine sanctuary and coastal ecosystem while creating livelihood opportunities through responsible tourism initiatives.

Cebu Landmasters Inc. (CLI) founder and chairman Jose R. Soberano III received the Most Distinguished Individual Award for his leadership in developing one of the country’s leading regional property firms.

The award also recognized Soberano’s efforts in building sustainable communities through CLI’s environmental and social programs, including initiatives implemented through the CLI Foundation.

International Pharmaceuticals Inc. (IPI) was named Most Distinguished Institution for its contributions to the healthcare sector.

Founded in Cebu in 1959, IPI has grown into a nationwide company while continuing programs focused on public health, community development, and environmental responsibility.

The company was recognized for its continued work in quality healthcare products, innovation, and community service.

Meanwhile, Cebuano fashion designer Cary Santiago received the ProgreCEBU Excellence Award for his contributions to the global fashion industry.

Santiago has showcased Filipino craftsmanship through his couture creations in international fashion events and beauty pageants, helping bring Cebuano creativity to the global stage.

The awards also recognized Cebu’s growing culinary reputation following the inclusion of local restaurants in the Michelin Guide’s first selection covering Manila and Environs and Cebu.

Under the Bib Gourmand category, The Pig & Palm, Pares Batchoy Food House, Esmen, Abaseria Deli & Cafe, CUR8, and Lasa were recognized for offering quality dining experiences at good value.

Restaurants included in the Michelin Selected 2026 list were also honored, including Abli, Pares Pares, House of Lechon, Socarrat, Maya, ATO-AH, Sialo, Kamakura, Enye by Chele Gonzalez, DIP, COCO, and Lantaw.

The recognition highlighted Cebu’s expanding role as a culinary destination and its contribution to strengthening the province’s tourism industry.

The Freeman President Miguel Belmonte said Cebu’s progress has been driven by entrepreneurs, institutions, and leaders whose contributions continue to shape the province’s economic and global standing.

“We honor the innovators who created opportunities, the institutions that empowered communities, and the visionaries whose contributions will shape Cebu’s future,” Belmonte said.

MCCI President Barbara Gothong Tan said recognizing individuals and organizations that create meaningful impact encourages others to continue contributing to Cebu’s development.

“It reminds us that progress is driven by people and organizations whose dedication inspires others to aim higher, serve better, and contribute more to our communities,” Tan said.
