The Philippine National Police (PNP) described President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday as generally peaceful and orderly, despite the arrest of individuals accused of vandalism during protest activities.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said no violent or untoward incident was recorded throughout the annual event, which brought together government officials, security forces, protesters, and various groups in Metro Manila.
“No untoward or violent incident was recorded throughout the conduct of the annual significant event,” Nartatez said.
He credited the peaceful conclusion of the SONA to the coordinated security preparations among the PNP, Armed Forces of the Philippines, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, Philippine Coast Guard, Bureau of Fire Protection, and the Quezon City government.
“Our sacrifices from planning to the implementation of security measures up to the last hours paid off and this would not have happened without the dedication and hard work not only of our personnel but also of our partners from other agencies,” he said.
The PNP deployed more than 20,000 police officers across Metro Manila to secure key government facilities, manage traffic, and coordinate with other agencies during the event.
Nartatez also thanked police personnel involved in maintaining peace and order during the President’s address.
“Let me express my gratitude and commendation to all police units and personnel who took part in ensuring that this year’s SONA is conducted peacefully and orderly,” he said.
He likewise recognized groups that held rallies and other activities during SONA day, commending their cooperation and compliance with existing rules and regulations.
Meanwhile, National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) chief Maj. Gen. Anthony Aberin backed Nartatez’s assessment that the event concluded without major incidents.
However, authorities reported that 51 individuals were apprehended for alleged acts of vandalism during protest activities. Those arrested included 13 minors and three paralegals.
The arrests came as several groups staged demonstrations in areas around Metro Manila ahead of and during the President’s address.
Security forces had earlier implemented measures around major roads and government areas to ensure public safety and manage the movement of protesters and motorists.
