Flag carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL) on Friday refuted a viral report published by a Thai news outlet that identified one of its pilots as a homeless man found on the streets of Bangkok.
In a statement, PAL said a report by Thai PBS World incorrectly identified Capt. Larry Malpaya as the individual featured in the story.
“The information is false. Capt. Larry Malpaya is an active Philippine Airlines pilot and is not the individual referred to or depicted in the article,” the airline said.
The Thai PBS World article claimed that a “former PAL and AirAsia pilot” had lost all his savings, divorced his wife, and became homeless before being rescued by a foundation and taken to a hospital for treatment of diabetes.
The report, which was also shared on the news organization’s social media platforms, quickly went viral.
PAL said it has formally requested Thai PBS World to immediately correct the article and all related social media posts to prevent the continued spread of false information.
“We remain committed to protecting the reputation and welfare of our employees and ensuring that accurate information is shared with the public,” the airline said.
PAL also said it values responsible journalism and expressed hope that the news organization would promptly correct the factual inaccuracies.
