The Cebu Provincial Government has reminded residents to avoid unnecessary contact with floodwaters as continuous rains increase the risk of leptospirosis infection.
In an advisory, the provincial government warned that floodwaters are not safe as they may be contaminated with bacteria from the urine of infected rats and other animals.
Capitol Public Health Consultant Dr. Elisse Nicole “Nikki” Catalan said leptospirosis can enter the body through open wounds, cuts, or through the eyes, nose, and mouth when a person comes into contact with contaminated water.
She said avoiding floodwater exposure remains the best way to prevent infection, especially during the rainy season.
For residents who need to pass through flooded areas, the Provincial Health Office advised wearing waterproof boots and gloves, covering wounds with waterproof bandages, and washing exposed skin immediately with soap and clean water after contact.
Health authorities also reminded the public that leptospirosis symptoms may not appear immediately and can develop two to 30 days after exposure.
Early signs include fever, chills, severe headache, muscle pain particularly in the calves and lower back, red eyes, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort.
Residents who experience these symptoms after exposure to floodwaters were advised to seek medical attention immediately and inform healthcare providers about their exposure.
The PHO warned that delayed treatment may lead to severe complications.
The public was also urged to seek urgent medical care if they experience symptoms such as yellowing of the eyes or skin, difficulty breathing, or reduced urine output, which may indicate a severe case.
Catalan also advised residents against taking antibiotics without proper medical consultation.
She said patients should avoid self-medicating with doxycycline or other antibiotics, as proper assessment is needed before treatment is given.
The provincial government said it will continue its information campaigns on leptospirosis prevention, particularly in flood-prone communities across Cebu.
