Air travelers will pay slightly lower fuel surcharges on flights from Aug. 16 to 31 after the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) lowered the applicable rate to Level 12 from Level 13 in the first half of August.
Under Level 12, airlines may collect a fuel surcharge ranging from P389 to P1,137 for domestic flights, depending on the distance.
For international flights, the surcharge will range from P1,284.80 to P9,550.13.
The new rates are lower than the Level 13 surcharge applicable from Aug. 1 to 15, which ranges from P423 to P1,237 for domestic flights and P1,396.74 to P10,385.42 for international destinations.
The fuel surcharge is an additional amount that airlines may impose on top of the base fare to help cover costs arising from fluctuations in oil prices.
The CAB uses a 15-day monitoring and implementation cycle to determine the applicable surcharge level, allowing airlines to adjust the additional fee based on movements in fuel prices.
For the Aug. 16-31 period, the CAB set the applicable exchange rate for the fuel surcharge at P61.30 per US dollar.
The lower surcharge level means passengers booking flights within the second half of August may see reduced additional fuel-related charges, although the final amount will depend on the flight distance and the airline’s applicable fare.
