More than 34,000 residents of Lapu-Lapu City have accessed subsidized rice since the city government launched its P20-per-kilo rice program in March.

City government data showed that 34,794 beneficiaries had been served as of Aug. 14, with a total of 8,305 sacks sold or distributed over 80 days.

Food Terminal Inc. (FTI) accounted for 5,305 sacks sold to 19,763 residents during 80 selling days.

The city government distributed another 3,000 sacks to 15,031 residents through barangay-level operations covering 29 barangays over 29 days.

The program began on March 26 through a Kadiwa Pop-up Store at the City Hall Grounds, initially prioritizing senior citizens and solo parents.

It was relaunched on May 11 through a partnership with FTI and the Department of Agriculture, expanding the program to other vulnerable sectors, including persons with disabilities, 4Ps beneficiaries, fisherfolk and indigent residents.

Qualified beneficiaries may purchase up to 10 kilos of rice at P20 per kilo.

To expand the supply, the city government allocated an additional P3 million from its General Fund for rice procurement to supplement the stocks provided through FTI.

The additional allocation allowed the subsidized rice to reach more communities, including mainland and island barangays.

The city government said the program aims to improve residents’ access to affordable rice amid rising food prices.
