The Department of Education (DepEd) on Tuesday assured psychological first aid and psychosocial support to learners and school personnel affected by a shooting incident at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University in Zamboanga City.
Two learners reportedly died in the incident at the university’s Junior High School campus in Barangay Lunzuran. A Grade 9 learner, identified as a child in conflict with the law, was reportedly involved in the shooting.
DepEd expressed concern over the incident and said it was coordinating with mental health partners to assist those affected.
“We are also coordinating with mental health partners to provide Psychological First Aid and psychosocial support to those affected,” the agency said in a statement.
The department also assured affected learners and their families of other necessary assistance.
“DepEd stands with the Ateneo de Zamboanga community during this difficult time and is ready to extend whatever support and assistance we can to the affected learners, families, school personnel, and concerned authorities,” it said.
DepEd also urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information about the incident, as well as sensitive photos, videos and other details that could affect those involved.
Meanwhile, Ateneo de Zamboanga University said it coordinated with parents and guardians to facilitate the pickup of learners while authorities addressed the situation.
The university also asked the public to respect the privacy of the affected learners, families and school personnel.
“We pray for the quick resolution of the situation and for the safety of all. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding,” the university said.
School officials said they would release a full report once they had gathered and verified the details.
“We have set up official communication channels and will relay these information to the public as soon as possible,” the university said.
The university suspended classes until Wednesday following the incident.
It had also suspended in-person classes on Monday because of the high heat index.
