The Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) has become the only airport in the Philippines to achieve Level 2 Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) from the Airports Council International Asia-Pacific and Middle East (ACI APAC & MID).
Airport operator Aboitiz InfraCapital Cebu Airport Corp. (ACAC) announced the accreditation Wednesday, saying it recognizes MCIA’s verified greenhouse gas inventory and implementation of carbon management strategies.
MCIA General Manager Ricia Montejo said the accreditation validates the airport’s progress in integrating sustainability into its operations.
“This ACA Level 2 validates that our team is making real, measurable progress in embedding sustainability into every aspect of our operations,” Montejo said.
MCIA Authority General Manager Julius Neri Jr. said the achievement demonstrates the potential of public-private partnerships to advance sustainable infrastructure.
Under its updated carbon management plan, MCIA aims to reduce its emissions intensity by more than 90 percent by 2029 from its baseline levels.
The target forms part of the airport’s longer-term goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
MCIA is implementing several measures to reduce emissions, including improving energy efficiency through its building management system and using its 1.64-megawatt-peak rooftop solar facility.
The airport also uses smart sensors and monitoring and maintenance protocols to improve heating, ventilation and air-conditioning efficiency.
Other measures include monitoring fuel consumption of vehicles and equipment to match usage with operational needs and converting lighting systems to LED.
Montejo said the airport aims to balance its growth as a major transfer hub with environmental responsibility and global sustainability practices.
